Six runs gives Tigers the edge in inaugural Twenty20 match
In an entertaining display of sportsmanship and rivalry off the netball court, Mypolonga defeated Mannum in a thrilling cricket match as part of their pre-season netball preparations.
What initially began as a pre-season social match, evolved in to a community charity event where the cricket match was partnered with a local walkathon and $900 was raised for the Cancer Council SA.
The modified version saw a 12 over innings match where all team members bowl and field in different positions. Bonus runs were claimed in field for catches, run outs and stumpings.
Mypolonga batted first and scored three for 98 runs off 12 overs. Cass Martin was the highest scorer for Mypo on 19 runs earning her the best team player award for her side, while Stacey Kempe followed closely behind with 16 runs. Highlights of the night was when Mannum’s President Kelly Gladigau fielded a ball in covers and threw a direct hit, Ricky Ponting style, and Mannum’s Lucy Kendall clean bowled Mandy Lindner, the opening batter for Mypolonga.
Mannum batted the second innings. The best team player for the Mannum side, Sarah Maloney hit an unbelievable six over mid-on. Maloney went on to score 19 runs, while next highest scorer Kim Smithson was bowled out in a controversial decision on 14 runs. Late recruit for Mypo Mel Gregory took three classic catches during the innings. The match was briefly interrupted when a man, thought to be a Mannum supporter, became the first-ever streaker at the Mannum cricket grounds. Mannum scored 7 for 92, leaving Mypolonga the victors of the inaugural cup in a thriller.
Members of the community also participated in a ‘Cmon why don’t you Walk’ relay around the oval while the cricket match was played and their distance recorded. The team named ‘Ritchie Bendovers’ achieved the longest distance walked for the duration of the cricket match at 8km. All walkers who participated received a free pedometer from the Mid Murray OPAL program to help keep track of their steps.
Over 100 people attended the event where Cancer Council SA was represented by an official ambassador (and local Mannum woman) Louise Bond. Currently battling cancer, Louise spoke at the event about the importance of fundraising contributions from local communities. The social club of local Mannum business Horward Bagshaw also attended the event to present Louise with a generous donation of $250 to the Cancer Council SA.
The event was headed up by a great group of local Mannum people, including key drivers Paul Paech and Kelly Kuhn, who were instrumental in making it a success. Feedback from attendees has led the organisers to look at making it an annual event, so we look forward to seeing something bigger and better in 2013.
